Measurement system analysis (MSA) software runs the studies that show whether a measurement system is good enough for its job: gage R&R, attribute agreement, Type 1, bias and linearity, and stability. You have five kinds of options: statistics packages (Minitab, JMP), Excel add-ins (QI Macros, SigmaXL, SPC for Excel), free tools (JASP, our gauge R&R calculator or a spreadsheet you have checked), MSA built into gage management software (Axiospec, GageList, GAGEtrak Pro) and automotive quality platforms built around VDA 5 (Q-DAS solara.MP). Every tool in our study table below states it can run a gage R&R. The differences are in nested, attribute and Type 1 studies, unusual designs, default settings and price, which on October 29, 2026 ran from free tools to annual subscriptions such as $1,390 per user for JMP and $2,394 per user for Minitab’s entry bundle.
Your options at a glance
Most quality teams move up this ladder as their studies get more frequent, more varied or more audited:
Free
Free calculator, JASP or your own spreadsheet
Occasional crossed gage R&R studies on numeric data, run and checked by one person. Check any spreadsheet against a published example first.
Move up when: you need nested, attribute or Type 1 studies, or several people must produce the same report.
Excel add-in
QI Macros, SigmaXL or SPC for Excel
Your team works in Excel and wants templates and menus for the common MSA studies, with a one-time license.
Move up when: studies get larger, unbalanced or need extra factors, or you also want SPC, capability and DOE in one statistics package.
Statistics package
Minitab or JMP
Regular MSA across many characteristics, unusual designs (nested, unbalanced, extra factors), and the rest of Six Sigma statistics in one tool.
Move up when: you want every study scheduled and filed with the gage record and its calibration history.
Gage software
MSA inside gage management software
Studies stored next to each gage, with calibration records and due dates: Axiospec, GageList, GAGEtrak Pro or IndySoft.
If you supply German automotive customers that work to VDA 5, you need more than a %GRR: VDA 5 combines gage-study results with other uncertainty sources in an uncertainty budget (see the VDA 5 note in our gauge R&R guide). Hexagon describes its Q-DAS solara.MP as covering measurement system capability according to the MSA reference manual and test-process capability according to VDA 5, with an uncertainty budget and an expanded uncertainty calculated following the GUM. Hexagon publishes no price (Contact Sales).
Which MSA studies each tool covers
“MSA software” should cover more than one study. These are the ones that come up most, as Minitab’s documentation describes them:
- Gage R&R (crossed): every operator measures every part several times; it splits measurement variation into repeatability and reproducibility. Our gauge R&R guide explains it step by step.
- Nested: each operator measures different parts, because a part can’t be measured by everyone, as in destructive tests.
- Unbalanced or extra factors: missing readings, or factors beyond part and operator (Minitab handles both with its Expanded study).
- Attribute studies: two different things. Attribute agreement analysis checks whether appraisers agree with themselves, with each other and with a standard. The analytic method checks the bias and repeatability of a single go/no-go gage against reference values.
- Type 1 study: one operator measures one reference part repeatedly, as a first check before a full study.
- Bias and linearity: readings against reference values across the operating range.
- Stability: whether bias changes over time, usually tracked with a control chart of a master part measured at intervals.

Three things stand out:
- Nested and destructive studies are the main gap. Minitab, JMP, QI Macros, SPC for Excel and JASP state them; the gage management tools and our calculator don’t.
- “Attribute” means different studies in different tools. If your customer asks for an attribute gage study, check whether it means appraiser agreement (most tools) or the AIAG analytic method for a go/no-go gage (Minitab and QI Macros state it).
- Stability rarely has its own menu. It is a control chart of a reference part over time, so any tool with control charts can do it; Minitab also has a guided stability study in its MSA Module, and GAGEtrak Pro lists stability studies.

QI Macros and SPC for Excel state Excel support on both Windows and Mac. Axiospec and GageList are cloud services, and GAGEtrak runs on Windows on a local network (as stated for our calibration software comparison).
How to do a gage R&R in Minitab
This is the crossed study in Minitab Statistical Software, paraphrased from Minitab’s own help pages (example, options and data considerations). The menu names are Minitab’s.
Plan the study and create the worksheet
Stat > Quality Tools > Gage Study > Create Gage R&R Study Worksheet lays out the data collection for a gage R&R or EMP study. Minitab suggests at least 10 parts if you have a historical estimate of process variation, and about 15 to 35 parts if you don't; usually 3 to 5 operators; and at least 2 measurements of each part by each operator.
Measure in random order
Each operator measures all parts in a random order within each replicate. Choose parts across the whole process range, not consecutive parts, one shift or rejects.
Run the crossed study
Stat > Quality Tools > Gage Study > Gage R&R Study (Crossed). Select the columns for Part numbers, Operators and Measurement data (one row per measurement), and choose ANOVA under Method of Analysis.
Set the options
Under Options, enter the process tolerance (upper spec minus lower spec, or one or both limits). Study variation is 6 standard deviations by default. Alpha to remove interaction term decides when the operator × part interaction is dropped (ANOVA only); Minitab says 0.05 usually works well. You can also enter a historical standard deviation for process variation.
Read the results
Compare %Study Var and %Tolerance of the total gage R&R with the AIAG guideline, check the number of distinct categories (at least 5) and look at the graphs: by default Minitab shows six on one page. Our guide explains each number.
Fails: look at the components before buying a new gage
If you want to check your setup, Minitab’s example uses the AIAG data set (10 parts, 3 operators, 3 trials, tolerance 8) from its sample file GageData.MWX. Our gauge R&R guide works through the same data, and our calculator reproduces Minitab’s published ANOVA results for it to the last published decimal. Note that Minitab expects the long layout (one column each for part, operator and measurement), while the calculator takes one row per part.
For other designs and studies, everything is under Stat > Quality Tools > Gage Study:
- Gage R&R Study (Nested) when operators can’t all measure the same parts, for example in destructive testing. Minitab’s own example has 3 operators each measuring their own 5 parts twice.
- Gage R&R Study (Expanded) for unbalanced data or factors beyond part and operator.
- Type 1 Gage Study, Gage Linearity and Bias Study and Gage Run Chart (readings by part and operator, to see where variation comes from).
- Evaluate Measurement Process (EMP Crossed) if you follow Wheeler’s EMP criteria instead of the AIAG ones.
Attribute gage R&R in Minitab
“Attribute gage R&R” can mean two Minitab tools. Pick by what you’re judging:
| Attribute Agreement Analysis | Attribute Gage Study (Analytic Method) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it judges | People (appraisers) rating samples: pass/fail or ordered ratings | One attribute gage, such as an automated go/no-go check |
| Menu | Stat > Quality Tools > Attribute Agreement Analysis | Stat > Quality Tools > Gage Study > Attribute Gage Study (Analytic Method) |
| Data | Each appraiser rates the same samples in repeated trials, ideally against a known standard | 8 parts across the operating range, each with a reference value, each checked 20 times; record accepts and rejects |
| Output | Agreement within each appraiser, each appraiser vs the standard, between appraisers and all vs the standard, with Fleiss’ kappa (and Kendall’s coefficients for ordered ratings) | Bias and repeatability of the gage |
Sources: Minitab, Example of Attribute Agreement Analysis and What is an attribute gage study? Most forum questions about “attribute gage R&R” (inspectors judging defects, for example) need the first one.
How to do a gage R&R in JMP
In JMP 19, Analyze > Quality and Process > Measurement Systems Analysis opens one platform with three methods: EMP (Wheeler’s Evaluating the Measurement Process), Gauge R&R and Type 1 Gauge (JMP 19 Help). What you set in the launch window:
- Roles: Y, Response (the measurements, all in one column: stack them first if they are spread over several), Part, Sample ID, and X, Grouping for operators. Adding a Standard column with reference values enables the bias and linearity reports.
- Model type: Main, Crossed, Crossed with Two Factor Interactions, Nested, or the three-factor Crossed then Nested and Nested then Crossed.
- Tolerance and process sigma go in the MSA metadata dialog, which gives % of Tolerance and % Process in the report.
JMP states that its Gauge R&R method works whether or not the design is balanced. Attribute studies are in a separate platform: Analyze > Quality and Process > Variability/Attribute Gauge Chart, with Chart Type set to Attribute; it gives agreement reports and, with a standard, an effectiveness report.
Excel add-ins and spreadsheets
Three Excel add-ins state MSA features on their own sites:
- QI Macros lists templates for Type 1, Type 2 (ANOVA and average & range) and Type 3 gage R&R, attribute pass/fail, attribute agreement, the attribute analytic method, bias and linearity, destructive and nested studies, and says it is compatible with the AIAG MSA 4th edition.
- SigmaXL has a gage R&R template for balanced studies (6 standard deviations by default, 5.15 as an option), an MSA dialog for up to 30 parts, 10 operators and 10 replicates, an attribute agreement template and a bias and linearity template.
- SPC for Excel lists 12 MSA techniques: three EMP studies (consistency, short and basic), ANOVA and average and range gage R&R, nested, Type 1, attribute gage R&R, linearity and bias, plus equivalency of instruments, Bland-Altman plots and Deming regression.
When a spreadsheet is enough
Your own spreadsheet is enough when the study is a balanced, crossed gage R&R on numeric data, one person owns the file, and you have checked it against a published example. The AIAG data set published by Minitab and SPC for Excel is the obvious test: your sheet should give %GRR = 26.68 % by average and range and 27.86 % by ANOVA (worked example).
It stops being enough when:
- The design doesn’t fit the template. The average and range method needs a constant for each number of trials, operators and parts, and a template only works for the sizes it has constants for; ANOVA needs no constants.
- You need the operator × part interaction, which the average and range method can’t estimate.
- You need attribute, nested or Type 1 studies, which a gage R&R sheet doesn’t do.
- Several people edit the file and nobody can tell which version produced last year’s PPAP study. One forum user describes an Excel workbook held together by several macros that no longer copes as the data grows (r/Metrology; an anecdote, not a rule).
Free MSA software
- Our gauge R&R calculator (we built it, so weigh that): crossed studies by ANOVA and average and range, 2 to 5 operators, 2 to 5 trials, 2 to 15 parts, paste from Excel, and a CSV download. It is checked against the AIAG example as published by Minitab and SPC for Excel, and the data stays in your browser. It doesn’t do nested, attribute, Type 1, bias, linearity or stability studies. Open the calculator.
- JASP, a free, open-source statistics program from the University of Amsterdam (AGPL-3.0; version 0.99.0 released October 21, 2026). Its Quality Control module lists a Type 1 instrument capability study, type 2 and 3 gauge r&R, gauge r&R for non-replicable measurements, a type 4 linearity study, attribute agreement analysis, a test-retest range method and probability of detection, plus control charts and capability analysis (jaspQualityControl on GitHub).
- R, if you can code: the CRAN package SixSigma (version 0.11.1, 2023) includes gage R&R among its tools.
Free tools still cost time. When a forum user asked for a lower-cost alternative to their statistics package, one reply pointed out that a free tool still has a learning curve, and another that, for IATF 16949 work, what matters is that the calculation follows the AIAG manual (r/SixSigma; anecdotes).
MSA inside gage management software
Some calibration and gage management tools run MSA studies next to the gage records, so each study is filed with the gage it evaluates. What the vendors state:
- Axiospec: an AIAG MSA suite (gage R&R, bias, linearity, attribute agreement) on every plan, including the free one.
- GageList: gage R&R (Type II, crossed, including the operator × part interaction, with %R&R, %Tolerance and ndc), attribute gage studies, linearity and bias, from the Plus plan.
- GAGEtrak Pro: an MSA suite with gage R&R, linearity and stability studies (MSA 4th edition), and MSA study schedules on its due list.
- IndySoft: “AIAG MSA” among its features (as we read it on October 9, 2026, for our calibration software comparison).
The advantage is one record per gage. The questions to ask in a trial: does it show the variance components or ANOVA table, can you see and change the settings (method, interaction, multiplier), and does it handle the designs you need beyond a balanced crossed study? Our calibration software comparison covers the rest of each product.
Same data, different answers: settings to check
Two tools can give different results from the same readings without either being wrong. Before you compare a result with your customer’s, check these settings:
| Setting | Why it matters | Minitab | JMP | Our calculator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Method | ANOVA and average and range estimate the components differently | ANOVA or Xbar and R (Method of Analysis) | Variance components from the model; REML settings in the launch options | Both, side by side |
| Operator × part interaction | Pooling it into repeatability changes the components | Dropped when its p-value is not below “Alpha to remove interaction term” (0.05 by default) | Not stated on the pages we read | Pooled when p > 0.05, or kept (option) |
| Study variation multiplier | Changes %Tolerance, not %Study Variation | 6 by default | Sigma multiplier (set in options) | 6, or 5.15 |
| Number of distinct categories | Truncation makes it jump (4.86 becomes 4) | √2 × part SD / gage R&R SD, truncated | 1.41 × PV / RR, truncated | 1.41 × PV / GRR, truncated |
| Acceptance guideline | Which bands the help or report applies | AIAG 10 % guideline on %Study Var and %Tolerance | Barrentine: 10 / 20 / 30 % (help pages) | AIAG 10 % and 30 % |
| Process variation | Parts in the study or a known value | Study parts or historical standard deviation | Study parts or historical process sigma | Study parts only |
Sources: Minitab (options; methods and formulas; key results); JMP 19 Help (launch options, Gauge R&R report) and JMP 16 Help (ndc); our calculator page. With the AIAG example data, the same 90 readings give %GRR = 26.68 % by average and range and 27.86 % by ANOVA, and ndc = 5 or 4.
Validation and audits
Two more points that come up in audits:
- IATF 16949 (clause 7.1.5.1.1) expects MSA for the measuring systems in the control plan, but not a separate study for every instrument: gauges with the same characteristics can be grouped into families (IATF FAQ 6, June 2026).
- Software doesn’t fix the study design. The most-voted forum thread on gage R&R we found describes two years of studies made unusable because parts of different models were used to create variation (r/AskEngineers; an anecdote). Part selection, randomization and blind measurement are covered in our guide; for bias, linearity and stability in context, see measurement system analysis.
How we compiled this page
- Scope. Tools that state MSA features on an official page we could read: two statistics packages, three Excel add-ins, two free programs plus our own calculator, three gage management tools (and IndySoft from our earlier comparison), and one VDA 5 platform. Other names come up in forums and listings (for example Quantum XL, DataLyzer, QC-Calc, PolyWorks, MeasurLink and online calculators); we left them out because we didn’t check them on an official MSA page, or because MSA is not their main purpose. We may add them.
- Facts. Read in each vendor’s or developer’s own documentation on October 29, 2026, and paraphrased. The Minitab and JMP steps come from their help pages, not from screenshots. We did not install or test any product other than our own calculator.
- Prices. Only those published on the vendor’s own site, in USD. We don’t use prices from directories, resellers or forums.
- No ratings. No scores, no ranking, no “best for” awards. The matrix and tables are in groups and alphabetical order within each group.
- Forum opinions. Used only for general points, paraphrased and labeled as anecdotes, with no usernames.
- Independence. No affiliate links, payments or free licenses from any vendor, and no vendor reviewed this page (editorial policy; methodology).
Vendors and readers: if something here is wrong or out of date, write to hello@acribi.com with a link to the page on your site that shows the correct information. We correct confirmed errors and log them in our corrections log.
FAQ
What is the best MSA software?
There is no single best tool. Every option on this page states it can run a gage R&R. What separates them is the other studies (nested, attribute, Type 1, bias and linearity, stability), how they handle unusual designs, the license model and where the results are stored. Start from the studies your customers ask for, then compare price and workflow.
Is there free MSA software?
Yes. Our gauge R&R calculator runs crossed studies by ANOVA and average and range in your browser. JASP, a free open-source statistics program, has a Quality Control module with Type 1, gauge r&R, non-replicable (destructive) studies, linearity and attribute agreement. Axiospec includes its MSA suite in its free plan for up to 50 instruments. A spreadsheet you have checked against a published example is the other free option.
How much does Minitab cost?
On October 29, 2026, Minitab published annual prices for its Solution Center bundles, which include Minitab Statistical Software: $2,394 per named user per year for Core, $2,593.50 for Analytics and $2,793 for Copilot (USD, before tax). Its Measurement System Analysis Module cost $528 a year on top and required a Core license. For Minitab Statistical Software on its own, the product page asks you to request pricing.
How do I do an attribute gage R&R in Minitab?
Usually with Attribute Agreement Analysis (Stat > Quality Tools > Attribute Agreement Analysis): several appraisers rate the same samples at least twice, and Minitab reports agreement within each appraiser, between appraisers and against a known standard, with kappa statistics. If you want the bias and repeatability of a single go/no-go gage against reference values, Minitab has a separate Attribute Gage Study (Analytic Method).
Can I do a gage R&R in Excel?
Yes. The average and range method needs only averages, ranges and constants, and ANOVA needs sums of squares, so a spreadsheet can do both. Excel add-ins such as QI Macros, SigmaXL and SPC for Excel add ready-made MSA templates and menus. Whatever you use, check it against a published example before you rely on it.
Why do Minitab and my spreadsheet give different results?
Usually because of settings, not errors: ANOVA versus average and range, whether the operator × part interaction is pooled, a study-variation multiplier of 6 or 5.15, the ndc formula, and whether process variation comes from the study parts or a historical value. With the AIAG example data, %GRR is 26.68 % by average and range and 27.86 % by ANOVA.
Does JMP do gage R&R?
Yes. In JMP 19, Analyze > Quality and Process > Measurement Systems Analysis offers the EMP method, Gauge R&R and Type 1 Gauge, with crossed, nested and mixed models, and bias and linearity reports when you add a standard. Attribute studies are in the Variability/Attribute Gauge Chart platform. Note that JMP's help interprets % Gauge R&R with Barrentine's guidelines (10, 20 and 30 %), not the AIAG 10 % and 30 % thresholds.
Do I need to validate MSA software?
If you work under ISO 13485 or the FDA's QMSR, yes: software used in the quality management system, including off-the-shelf software, must be validated for its intended use, and a spreadsheet that does the calculation is software too. ISO 9001 has no explicit software validation clause, but running a published example through your tool is a cheap check worth doing anyway.
